Dinosaurs roamed the area 200 million yrs ago and left a collection of their skeletons. When the Indians came they considered it a haunted place full of evil spirits. Later a group of cattle thieves occupied the space. Finally, in a poker game in 1928 the town was put into the hands of Arthur Pack, a wealthy American naturalist who encouraged Georgia O'Keeffe to visit. The artist soon fell in love with the place ~ visiting often and eventually buying a house nearby.
