Ancient Burial Ground to Parking Lot


Have you noticed that half of the parking lot across from Berkeley's Spenger's restaurant at Fourth Street is closed.  Why?  It turns out that it is a shellmound,one of the largest in the region. 
It was once 30 feet high and filled with ancient Ohlone Indian tools, bones and skeletons. Archeological consultants are trying to figure out the extent of the artifacts and what to do next.

Rotary Peace Grove at Tilden Park

High atop the hills of Tilden Park sits a serene sanctuary known as the Rotary Peace Grove. This section of the park was donated to Berkeley Rotary in 1955 when they began planting redwood trees. Each year, a different tree is dedicated to a leader in world peace and bronze plaques are displayed with the honorees' names at the base of each tree. The members of the Rotary club prune and  clean up regularly to help preserve the magic and the beauty. The hike to the grove makes a wonderful outing for the entire family.
