Sheila Sabine - Out and About - Bonsaï Garden at Lake Merritt

Open seven days a week with free admissions, this is truly a hidden jewel.


Established in 1999 , this small but vibrant spot contains some amazing bonsai examples,
Some even 1,600 years old. all the plants have been donated -It is run by committed volunteers, including the Hillside Garden Club - all the soil used lovingly on the plants comes directly from Japan -another reason to visit Lake Merritt.

Rotary Peace Grove at Tilden Park

High atop the hills of Tilden Park sits a serene sanctuary known as the Rotary Peace Grove. This section of the park was donated to Berkeley Rotary in 1955 when they began planting redwood trees. Each year, a different tree is dedicated to a leader in world peace and bronze plaques are displayed with the honorees' names at the base of each tree. The members of the Rotary club prune and  clean up regularly to help preserve the magic and the beauty. The hike to the grove makes a wonderful outing for the entire family.
