Great Escape ~ Carmel Mission Basilica!

It’s a 2 hr drive to visit this historic church, founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Sierra. Located near the mouth of the Carmel River and close to the ocean, it originally served the native Ohlone Indian communities and the church museum has many old artifacts and photographs. Today it is an active parish church with regular services. After visiting the museum you can pop over to the beach, just 10 minutes away and have a picnic. A really fun holiday so close to home!

High atop the hills of Tilden Park sits a serene sanctuary known as the Rotary Peace Grove. This section of the park was donated to Berkeley Rotary in 1955 when they began planting redwood trees. Each year, a different tree is dedicated to a leader in world peace and bronze plaques are displayed with the honorees' names at the base of each tree. The members of the Rotary club prune and  clean up regularly to help preserve the magic and the beauty. The hike to the grove makes a wonderful outing for the entire family.
